One of my great benefactors, a man who helped me to become published and who is a good friend, Shawn Speakman, is self-publishing his novel, "The Tempered Steel of Antiquity Grey," through his imprint, Grim Oak Press.
I know it has been a while, but we're still in a sort of limbo here. The printers in China have the book and the ball is in their court.
Before I say anything more, I want to give a shout out to Mark Vierra, at OnTheMark.net, for his efforts on our behalf. I've been confident all along that he has his eye out for the best possible product. He's gently corrected our mistakes and walked us through this HUGE process. Big thanks, Mark!
So: where we stand. All the files are in, and have been for two or three weeks. The next step is a look at proofs, and then we can give the go-ahead for the book to enter production. We proofed the book so many times from so many different points of view that I don't expect to encounter any more problems.
I know you're anxious to finally hold FOUND WORLDS in your hands—believe me, so am I!
The latest slowdown was in the final files for the slip case and the dragonskin Special Edition of the book. For some reason, China needs those before they'll start printing proofs, for some reason. Then I think summer intruded and things slowed down. Plus, of course, the 'rona is making everything take longer than it should. I know we're all weary of it and anxious for things to return to normal, but stay safe and keep an eye out. Good things are coming!
The ultimate file is finally delivered. All things can now progress! It's in China's hands...
I know it has been a while since I posted an update. Between the pandemic and unrest, things are working more slowly than I anticipated. The printer's prepress people kept finding little things, piecemeal, that we needed to fix. Tiny things, like a hairline in a text block being rgb (three-color digital color profile— red, green, blue, like your monitor or your TV) instead of cmyk (four color printing color profile—cyan, magenta, yellow, black, like any color printed material). We had a few resolution issues. But hey... it's a 352 page book with possibly half again as many images in it. There were bound to be issues.
But last night we (finally!) uploaded what I believe is the ultimate, final, finished file to the printers. The next step will be the proofing of color, and then it will hopefully go to press. Assuming we aren't at war with China in the next few weeks.
