I am about to hand off the finalized files for the book to the printers. I pored over the last set of proofs. This world of printing from pdf's is all new to me. Back in the day, printers made any color corrections. Now, apparently, that's my job too. The digital age!  But I'm ready to go. I will post another update as soon as everything is delivered.

2nd Color Proofs are in!

...sort of. There are two components still on their way, in transit, and then I believe we will be ready for the printers to go. The colors are looking good in this second round, but I'll give a more complete update when the last of the proof materials show up.

Stand in there! We're moving! Grab a handrail!

PROOFS!

I have word that the second round of proofs is on its way. If you go back and look at Update #28, you'll see how thorough the first round was. I posted a video of Dqniel and me opening the package from the printers. I could have included these photos too:

We received the first round of proofs in October, and celebrated with some good scotch.
Spine of the Special Edition. Can you guess what it says?

The quality of the mock-up pleased me overall. There were a few images—only about ten— that I thought were far enough off the mark that they required addressing. I mailed prints to OnTheMark showing best color; today I received email images of the second round of proofs:

My print on the left, new proof on the right
My print on the left, proof on the right. The cover was way off in the first round, probably due to a color profile being wrong somewhere, so this fix was important.

When these are in my hands, I'll make the call, but Mark said he thought they looked pretty good. I trust his eye by this point, so I'm confident that we will be going to press soon!

There is only one other minor matter left to address, and that's the choice of foil on the book and sleeve. I wanted to nudge the color slightly in another direction, but different foils behave differently on different materials. I was happy enough with the first one to call it and move on.

Go into the light, little book—it's the end of the tunnel. :o)

Another step forward

The material for the second round of color proofing has finally found its way to China. I am hopeful that this will seal the deal and then we can go to production! It's the last hurdle. When I know that the book is on the presses, I'll get the other collateral materials underway.

In the meantime, please hang tight. I'll try to update more often, but the finish line is in sight. I think...
